Credit unions grew out of the same cooperative impulse that built the packing houses and irrigation districts of this valley, and they still hold a large share of everyday banking across the interior. Interior Savings keeps a location at 2071 Harvey Ave in Dilworth, sharing that address with one other business on the arterial carrying most of Kelowna's cross town traffic.
The practical difference between a credit union and a bank is membership. Chequing and savings accounts, mortgages, lines of credit, small business banking, term deposits and registered plans all look much the same across the counter, but members hold a share, get a vote, and in many cases receive a portion of profits back. Branch networks are smaller than those of the national banks, though shared service arrangements usually widen the number of machines and counters you can use without paying a fee. Anyone moving accounts over should ask about transfer help, direct deposit changes and what happens to automatic payments in the meantime.
For anything beyond a deposit, an appointment saves time. Mortgage renewals, business accounts and financial planning conversations are booked rather than walked in on, and month ends and the first working day after a long weekend are predictably the busiest hours at any counter. Kelowna is a spread out city, so choosing the branch nearest your daily route rather than the one nearest your house is usually the smarter habit. Harvey moves well outside the commuter peaks and badly during them, which is worth remembering if you are coming across from Rutland or up from the Mission for a signing.
