Filling a prescription is only the visible half of what a community pharmacy does. The rest is quieter: sorting out an interaction between two medications, explaining what a new dose will feel like, arranging refills so that a household is not making three trips a month, and answering the small questions people would rather not book an appointment for.

Pharmacies differ in what they take on beyond dispensing, and a phone call is the fastest way to find out. Ask whether they can transfer your prescriptions across from another store, which usually needs little more than the name of the previous pharmacy. Ask about synchronising refill dates, about delivery if getting out is difficult, and about compounding, injections, medication reviews, home health supplies or travel advice if any of those apply to you. If you are managing prescriptions for a parent or a child alongside your own, say so early, because that changes how a pharmacy team sets up your file and saves a good deal of back and forth later on.
