Every suburb needs a room where the walk home is short. Neighbours Pub fills that role at 3099 Shannon Lake Rd, in a building it shares with two other businesses, out in the Shannon Lake neighbourhood on the northwest side of West Kelowna.
Shannon Lake wraps around its golf course and its small lake, and like much of the west side it filled in quickly as orchard and open hillside turned into housing. West Kelowna only became a city in 2015, and neighbourhoods here can feel newer than the community around them. A pub in that setting does a particular job. It is where a round of golf ends, where a team goes after a game at the arena, and where people who have driven home across the bridge from Kelowna sit down without getting back in the car.
Pubs in British Columbia are licensed in ways that shape what they can offer, and the details differ from one to the next. Whether minors are permitted with a meal, how late the kitchen runs compared with the bar, whether there is a patio and when it opens for the season, and what happens on nights with live sport or music are all worth checking. Larger groups are usually easier to accommodate with notice, particularly on weekends and through the summer when the west side is at its busiest. A quick call before heading over from Glenrosa or Smith Creek settles most of it.
