A diner earns its regulars on being the same every time, which is a harder trick than it sounds and the reason people keep going back to one rather than trying the next. Diner on Six is at 2511 6 Hwy in Vernon, on one of the routes that carries traffic straight through the downtown core, which puts it in front of people passing through as well as those who live nearby.
The trade runs on breakfast and lunch more than dinner, on quick turnaround, and on a kitchen that can put out a plate without a long wait. What changes from one place to another is worth knowing before you sit down. Some serve breakfast right through the day and some cut it off mid morning, some do a brisk takeout business and some are built entirely around the tables, and seating can be tight enough at the busy end of the morning that a group of six is a different proposition than a pair. A quick call before driving over settles all of it, particularly if you are bringing people in from out of town.
Vernon is the service centre for the whole North Okanagan, and the highway routes into it carry farm traffic, commuters and visitors heading for the lakes in roughly equal measure. That mix is what a downtown kitchen on a busy route feeds. Winters at this end of the valley are colder than farther south, and a hot breakfast has a different value in January than it does in July, which is one reason the steady trade in a place like this comes from the local crowd rather than the summer one.
