About Kaleidoscope Fruit Ranch
Buying fruit from the ground that grew it is one of the plain pleasures of living on this bench, and Summerland has kept that trade alive even as some of the orchard land around it has turned to grapes. Kaleidoscope Fruit Ranch farms at 8200 Front Bench Road in the Giant's Head area, on the terrace of ground above the lake, and puts its details at kaleidoscopefruitranch.ca.
Farm gate operations run on the harvest, not on retail convention. Cherries arrive first, stone fruit follows through the hottest weeks, and apples and pears carry the season into the autumn, with each variety holding a window that can be shorter than a fortnight. Some ranches let visitors pick their own, some sell only what has already been packed, and many take orders by the box for people canning, freezing or feeding a crowd. Those are the things to establish before driving out, along with whether the fruit you actually want has started yet.
This ground has been studied carefully for a long time. A federal research station on the bench has worked on tree fruit and viticulture here for more than a century, and the results show up in what the surrounding orchards plant and replant. For a visitor the practical notes are simpler. Come early in the day during hot spells, bring a cooler for the drive home, and expect the busiest weekends to be the ones just after a variety comes ripe. Trout Creek and the highway are close by if the day is turning into a longer circuit of the district.
