About 8th generation vineyard
Grape growing on the west bench of Okanagan Lake sits alongside the orchards rather than replacing them, and the slopes running through Summerland hold both in the same view. 8th Generation Vineyard is on this stretch, at 6807 Highway 97 in the Giant's Head part of town, where the ground climbs away from the water toward the rounded summit that gives the area its name.
Wineries in the valley generally do several jobs at once. Grapes are farmed on the property or brought in from growers nearby, the wine is made and cellared on site, and a tasting room handles the retail end of it. What differs from one gate to the next is the shape of the visit. Some pour flights at a bar, some seat guests at tables, some run by appointment only, and many wind the tasting side down once the weather turns. Anyone driving out for a first visit does well to confirm the season before setting off, and to ask whether a larger group needs to book.
Summerland is a regular stop on wine and cider tours of the western bench, with Penticton visible across the water and Highway 97 threading the whole run together. That makes it easy to string several stops into an afternoon, and it also makes a designated driver the sensible plan. Harvest and crush are the busiest weeks of the year on any wine property, so autumn visitors may find people working around them. Spring and early summer tend to be quieter, with the vines just leafing out and the lake still cold below.
