About HI Penticton
Travelling the Okanagan on a budget usually means trading privacy for position, and a bed close to the water beats a cheaper room a long way out of town. HI Penticton is at 464 Ellis Street, one block off the Main Street core and within an easy walk of the Okanagan Lake beach and the channel entrance at the north end of the city.
Hostel accommodation works on a different set of assumptions than a motel room. Beds are often sold individually in shared rooms, with private rooms available alongside them, and kitchens, laundry and common areas are usually shared as well. Membership can affect the rate at Hostelling International properties, so ask about that while booking. Other useful questions cover luggage and bicycle storage, arrival times if you are coming in late off a long drive, and whether linens and towels come with the bed or cost extra.
Booking runs through hihostels.ca, where the Penticton page is the place to check availability and room types. Timing matters more here than almost anywhere. The city fills through July and August, the mid-August Peach Festival draws crowds, and the general summer rush of visitors to both lakes pushes inexpensive beds out of reach quickly. Spring and autumn are far easier, and the valley is arguably better then, with the vineyards on the Naramata Bench in leaf or in harvest and the highway south toward Oliver and Osoyoos quiet.

Where to shop in Penticton: small, walkable and mostly local
Penticton's shopping is smaller than Kelowna's and more its own thing: a Main Street of independents, specialty food shops that outclass their size, and Cherry Lane covering the mall tier.
