Morning in a lake town has a rhythm of its own: dog walkers on the path by the water, tradespeople fuelling up before a drive out to a bench road, campers drifting in from the park in search of something hot. Rise and Shine Coffee House takes its place in that early routine in Okanagan Falls.
Coffee houses differ more than the sign on the door suggests. Some are built around a proper espresso bar and some around drip and a counter of baked goods, some are for sitting an hour with a laptop and some are shaped around a queue of takeaway cups. Between them the useful questions stay simple. Is food made on site or brought in, is there room to sit with a group, which non dairy milks are on hand, and can a large order be phoned through so a crew is not standing around while eight drinks are pulled one at a time. Small kitchens can usually do more than the counter display suggests when you give them warning.
This is a community that swells with summer visitors and thins right out for the rest of the year, and food and drink businesses across the valley move their opening with that swing, so plan around it rather than assuming a city schedule. A hot Saturday in July fills every seat near the water by mid morning. The beach and the grassy park at the head of Skaha Lake are the obvious destination for a cup taken away, and an early start is the surest way to have some of it to yourself before the day heats up.
