About Super A Foods
Lumby measures a fair amount of its social life through the grocery aisle. In a village of this size the food store is where people actually meet, catch up on who is doing what, and hear the news that never makes it onto a noticeboard. Super A Foods carries that double duty, supplying a community spread across small farms, woodlots and acreages in the White Valley east of Vernon.
A full-service grocery in a rural village generally runs produce, meat, dairy, bakery, frozen and dry goods together with a household and cleaning aisle, and often a service counter or two. Whether there is a butcher who will cut to order, a deli, in-store baking, or a way to pick up an order you phoned in beforehand differs from store to store, and those are the things worth asking about the first time you shop. Ordering ahead is particularly useful for larger cuts of meat and for anything you need in quantity.
The wider economics matter too. Driving to Vernon for a big shop is a common enough habit in the district, but between those runs the village store is what stands between a household and a wasted hour on Highway 6. Supporting it through the quiet months is the reason it is still there in the busy ones. In winter, when the highway can be slow and the side roads worse, having a proper grocery inside the village stops being a convenience and starts being a necessity.
