Oyama occupies the isthmus, the narrow neck of land holding Wood Lake and Kalamalka Lake apart, and it has kept a strong sense of its own farming history since long before the four communities were joined under one municipal name in 1995. Oyama General Store stands on that neck of land at 15970 Oyama Rd.
A general store in a place like this does a job no larger shop can. It is where a forgotten ingredient, a bag of ice, a jug of milk or a cold drink gets bought without a fifteen minute round trip into Winfield. Stock in stores of this kind is chosen by what people actually run out of, and the mix shifts through the year in step with who is around. Ask about something unusual and there is a fair chance it can either be pointed at on a shelf or ordered in for the following week.
Summer transforms the isthmus. Kalamalka Lake is the deep blue one along the eastern edge of the district, drawing swimmers and boats, Wood Lake sits on the other side with public beaches, and the orchard land between them moves into cherry picking at the height of it all. Traffic on Oyama Road in July has very little in common with the same road in February. For anyone staying nearby without a car, or working a block up the hill, a shop within walking distance is worth more than its square footage suggests, and small stores follow the seasons closely, so build flexibility into a late evening run.
