The One Eyed Budgie Gift Shop
About The One Eyed Budgie Gift Shop
The building known locally as the Laugh Factory sits at 2649 Highway 3, about thirty minutes from Penticton or Osoyoos and forty five minutes east of Princeton, and it houses The One Eyed Budgie Gift Shop along with a small gallery of local art. Most of what fills the shop is made on site rather than brought in, which is unusual for a gift shop of any size.
The workshop turns out concrete garden ornaments in animal and character shapes, along with more than a hundred wood signs, crates, small furniture pieces and folding Adirondack chairs, all built for a yard or a porch rather than a mantelpiece. Alongside the handmade stock sit soaps, soups, chocolate teas and jewelry from other makers, and the Ferdinand Galle Gallery portion of the building changes its featured British Columbia artist roughly every two weeks, so a repeat visit through a season tends to show different work on the walls.
The shop opens at 11 in the morning and closes at 5, with February hours cut back and a call ahead recommended before a special trip that time of year. The number is 250-499-2446, or 250-499-7198 if that does not reach anyone, and oneeyedbudgie.com carries photos of the current stock and gallery. Given how much of what is sold is one of a kind or made in small batches, a particular piece seen in a photo online is not guaranteed to still be on the shelf by the time a visitor arrives.
