About Shoe Warehouse
Shoes are one of the few things still worth buying with your feet in the room. Shoe Warehouse is at 2010 Harvey Ave, sharing its address with one other business, on the commercial side of Dilworth below the hillside streets that climb the mountain.
Sizing is the whole game. Feet change over the years, the two are rarely identical, and the number printed inside a shoe means something different from one maker to the next, so the only reliable test is standing up in the pair late in the day when your feet are at their largest. Ask whether staff will measure both length and width, what the exchange window looks like if a pair turns out wrong after a few wears indoors, and whether a shoe will take the insole or orthotic you already use. Seasonal stock moves quickly, and a size that is on the wall in March may be gone by June.
The valley asks a lot of footwear. Summers are hot and dry, which sends most people into sandals and light shoes for months, and the beaches along the lake shore mean a pair that copes with sand and water earns its keep. The benches and pine ridges behind the city are walking country, so something with a real sole is worth owning. Winter is short and more grey than white, so the heavy boots that make sense elsewhere in Canada are often more than this climate needs, and a waterproof shoe with decent grip covers most of what the season throws at you.
