About Hi Kelowna Hostel
Budget travel in the Okanagan has always run on a thin supply of beds, particularly in July and August when the whole valley fills up. Hi Kelowna Hostel operates from 245 Harvey Avenue, near the downtown end of that street and within walking distance of the waterfront parks and Bernard Avenue.
Hostel accommodation works differently from a hotel, and the differences are worth understanding before booking. Beds are usually sold by the bunk in shared dorms, with a smaller number of private rooms; bathrooms are often shared; and a common kitchen, a lounge and laundry are standard rather than extras. Check in windows can be narrower than a hotel's, luggage storage is normally available for the gap between checkout and a late bus, and quiet hours are enforced rather than suggested. Ask about the linen and towel policy, whether there is parking on site, any age or membership requirements, and how far ahead the summer weeks tend to fill.
The location suits people arriving without a car. Downtown Kelowna packs the waterfront parks, the museums and a good share of the city's restaurants into a few blocks, and the beaches sit at the foot of the streets running down to the lake. Summers here are hot and dry, so air conditioning is a fair thing to ask about before booking a room for August. Anyone planning to reach the vineyards on the benches above the city, or the smaller places further along the valley, will need a rental, a tour or a rideshare, because none of it is walkable from the city centre.
