Coldstream's Labour Day starts at 8 a.m. with parkrun and gets easier from there

Coldstream does not put on a show for the Labour Day long weekend, and that is precisely its pitch. This is the municipality between Vernon and the mountains where Kalamalka Lake does its clearest work, the rail trail runs flat through orchard country, and the long weekend arrives as three extra days of exactly what residents already have. One event does anchor Saturday morning, and it is free.

The short version

  • parkrun, 8 a.m. sharp: The Okanagan Rail Trail parkrun launched April 11, 2026 and runs every Saturday morning, year-round.
  • Kal Beach and the clear water: The beach fills by midday on holiday weekends; this is the trade-off for a lake this good within walking distance of two towns; so morning is the move, again.
  • Borrowing the neighbors' weekend: The honest description of this weekend in Coldstream is Vernon's weekend at half volume.
  • Eating around it: The parking spots at Kal Beach, however, will never be this easy again until next May.

parkrun, 8 a.m. sharp

The Okanagan Rail Trail parkrun launched April 11, 2026 and runs every Saturday morning, year-round - eight o'clock from May through September, nine o'clock the rest of the year, timed if you register in advance online, casual if you do not - and September 5 falls squarely in its 8 a.m. season. It starts and finishes along the rail trail in Coldstream, draws everything from stroller-pushers to people running it seriously, and costs nothing. Long-weekend editions run bigger than usual; visitors are not just welcome but expected, which is the whole ethos of the format. Bring the barcode or just come and jog.

The trail itself is the other reason to come: former railway grade, so dead flat, running the length of town toward the lake through fields and fence lines. Walk it, skate it, rent bikes in Vernon and do the out-and-back; early September gives it long shadows and cool air that July never offered.

Kal Beach and the clear water

Coldstream fronts the part of Kalamalka Lake that made its reputation: water that shifts between blue and green depending on how the light catches the calcium, warm enough to swim well into September, with Kal Beach as the main event and smaller accesses up the road for anyone allergic to company. The beach fills by midday on holiday weekends - this is the trade-off for a lake this good within walking distance of two towns - so morning is the move, again. Boaters put in at Kekuli Bay Provincial Park just north, where the launch and picnic grounds sit right against the water.

Lillyfest, Coldstream's own summer festival, lands August 29 - the weekend before Labour Day, not part of it. The district's calendar holds nothing scheduled for Sept 5 to 7 itself.

Borrowing the neighbors' weekend

The honest description of this weekend in Coldstream is Vernon's weekend at half volume. Everything across the boundary line - restaurants, groceries, the Renfaire running both weekend days - is minutes away, while your base camp stays quiet enough to hear the crickets. That combination is exactly why people stay here instead of in town.

Eating around it

Vernon's eating scene handles the serious meals - the avenue's rooms book up on long-weekend Saturdays, same as always - while Coldstream's own table comes from the land: fruit stands along the rural roads hitting their apple transition, farm gates, and the kind of kitchens attached to golf courses and marinas that feed you properly without ceremony. This directory's Vernon guides cover both sides of the border since everyone here crosses it daily anyway.

Labour Day Monday closes the account the way it does everywhere: stat closures, quiet streets, one last swim. The water stays swimmable for weeks yet. The parking spots at Kal Beach, however, will never be this easy again until next May.
