About Wild Oak Café

Two cafes in the same small town are never quite the same cafe, which is a decent argument for trying both. Wild Oak Cafe can be found at 2539 Pleasant Valley Boulevard, in a community of just over five thousand people set among the hayfields and dairy pasture north of Vernon.

Independent kitchens are where the interesting variation lives. One will lean toward baking, another toward a proper sit down midday meal, a third toward being the room where people talk for two hours over a single cup; none of that is visible from outside, and the fastest way to find out is to walk in and ask. If you are bringing a group, want a table for a meeting or would rather know first whether there is anywhere to sit outside once the weather turns warm, those are all reasonable things to raise on the phone beforehand.

Armstrong gives a cafe an unusual customer mix for its size. Farmers and dairy workers keep hours that start early, commuters pass through on the way south to Vernon or north to Salmon Arm, and the young families who moved here for cheaper housing have made the town noticeably less sleepy than its population suggests. Add the autumn fair, which brings much of the North Okanagan through the streets for a few days each year, and the difference between a Tuesday in February and a Saturday in September is considerable. Plan accordingly if you are counting on a quiet table.
