The Okanagan built its name on wine, but the valley has grown a second, younger trade alongside the vineyards, and Marten Brewing Co. is part of that at 2933 30 Ave in the heart of downtown Vernon. A brewery downtown works differently from a winery out on a bench above the lake, because it is a walk from the office rather than a drive through the rows.
A brewery taproom usually runs on three lines of business at once. There is beer poured on site, there is takeaway in cans or refillable growlers, and there is wholesale into local restaurants and liquor stores. What varies between one operation and another is almost everything else. Some serve food, some bring in a kitchen or a food truck, some allow minors during certain hours and some do not, and liquor licensing in British Columbia shapes a good deal of it. Seasonal and one off batches come and go, so what is written on the wall changes through the year.
If you are planning a visit, a couple of questions settle most of it. Ask whether the taproom takes groups or bookings, whether there is food on site, and what the rules are for children and dogs, since those differ from place to place. Ask about takeaway if you want to carry something home to the Landing or out to the Commonage. And plan your ride, because downtown Vernon is compact and walkable, which makes it an easier place than most to leave the car behind for the evening.
