South Okanagan General Hospital

Health care for the southern end of the valley concentrates in Oliver, and South Okanagan General Hospital is the reason. It stands at 911 McKinney Road, a short distance off the main street, and serves a catchment reaching well beyond the town limits to the farms, vineyards and rural roads of the surrounding district and the communities down toward the border.

Distance shapes how people here use the building. Oliver lies between Penticton to the north and Osoyoos to the south with the highway running straight through town, so the drive in from most of the surrounding agricultural area is short by rural standards. Seasonal population swings matter as well. The orchards and vineyards draw a large temporary workforce through the growing and harvest months, and the touring traffic that fills the valley every summer adds further to the numbers a small hospital in a farming district is asked to serve.
