Traffic between Penticton and Osoyoos runs straight through Oliver, which is why so much of the town's accommodation faces the valley highway. Cactus Tree Inn stands at 5887 Okanagan Highway, near enough to Main Street for dinner on foot and near enough to the road for an early start in the morning.
Roadside properties in wine country vary more than their frontages suggest, so a few questions when you book will save surprises later. Ask about the room configuration and bed count, whether a kitchenette or a fridge comes with the unit, how parking works if you are towing a trailer or a boat, what the pet policy is, and how far ahead a cancellation has to be made in the busy months. Air conditioning is worth confirming as well, because the South Okanagan sits at the hot end of the province through July and August, and a shaded parking spot is not a small thing at four in the afternoon.
Using the town as a base has a plain logic to it. The Golden Mile Bench and its vineyards lie south along the highway, more wineries run north and along the far side of the valley, McIntyre Bluff anchors the view to the south, and Tuc-el-nuit Lake sits a short drive northeast.
